COVID-19 has certainly changed consumer buying patterns! From panic buying to stockpiling toilet paper and the uptake of online ordering and delivery, these changes have been both a boon and a burden to retailers and manufacturers alike. One notable benefactor has been the ‘Shop Local’ movement and if your product is locally made or uses local ingredients, this may be an advantage to your label and marketing.
Shopping locally for products and ingredients has taken on more meaning for more consumers. For some, it is in knowing that the consumer is supporting local employment and for others it might be the growing distrust of overseas products (and politics). For others still, there may be deals to be had with more premium produce and goods available with the decline of restaurant and commercial trade and associated logisitics and distribution channels.
When considering how to use ‘Shop Local’ marketing for your product, here are some (but not all) important considerations:
- Country of Origin labelling requirements
- Using the Australian Made logo
- Supply chain disruptions that may impact ingredient sources
- The values of your audience.
It is food for thought. While price and convenience are still strong market drivers, the Shop Local movement has certainly attracted new consumers and made those already onboard further their search for even more local products.
