Food businesses will have until 25 February 2024 to implement new allergy
‘plain English’ labelling in Australia. The main requirements are that the new allergy warnings are in a specific format and location on the label and use plain English. During the three-year transition period, businesses can use the existing requirements or the new requirements.
What should I do now?
You should familiarise yourself with the new plain English allergy labelling requirements and formulate a plan to make sure all labels are fully compliant by 25 February 2024.
This is also a good time to review all of your food product labelling, including how your products effectively use health claims to inform your consumers and gain market share.
