Further to my article, “Does my food product need a label?”, I have received lots of questions about the Food Standards Code exemptions so I thought I would put out a handy flowchart.
Now, this flowchart does not cover all situations or requirements but it gives you a starting point. Importantly, it shows that more often than not, a label is required on food products, except in limited circumstances. Where allergens are concerned, ingredient information is vitally important for consumers so even if your product does not need a label, accurate and full ingredient information needs to be made available to consumers at their request.
